Both Debbie Harry and Chris Stein were deliriously sick for much of Blondie's 1978 European Plastic Letters tour. They wrote this song about the difficult time and originally thought of titling it "The Desperate Hours."

A promotional video was filmed for each Eat To The Beat track, the first such project in rock music. While The Kinks' live One For The Road was made available first, Blondie's effort had been ready months earlier, only to be delayed by union disputes. Each video was directed by David Mallet and filmed in and around New York, with the exception of the clip for "Union City Blue."
