In an interview with The Australian, lead singer Adam Levine explained that he wrote this about his frustration at the state of politics and the US role in the war in Iraq. Levine began writing the track a few years earlier about a failed relationship, which is a common theme in Levine's writing. But revisiting the song for this It Won't Be Soon Before Long, he recognized a whole new dimension to the track and made the song more political. Said Levine: "There is so much going on in America at the moment. I hope we (the US) can dig ourselves out of this hole. There's a bunch of confusion going on in the world.''

This song rose from #64 to #1 on the US chart in 1 week (May 12, 2007), breaking the record for the biggest leap to #1 in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the 52-1 leap of Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" in October 2002. The record was broken by T.I.'s "Whatever You Like," when on the Billboard magazine issue dated September 6, 2008 it jumped from #71 to #1.

It Won't Be Soon Before Long was the most downloaded album on iTunes in 2007. Amy Winehouse's Back to Black was second and Kanye West's Graduation third.
