The song was originally titled "Pebble and the Man." After Donovan went to India with the Beatles he rewrote the song.
The song is done as a canon with backing vocals by Graham Nash, Mike McCartney and Leslie Duncan. It has been adopted as a prayer and Donovan says that various schools have sung it. It was also used in a Fruity Cheerios commercial.
