This song features Colbie Caillat. The "Bubbly" singer told MTV Asia News how their collaboration came about: "He (Mraz) emailed me many months ago, saying that he loved my music, that he's heard my album and he has a song on his album that he wanted me to help him finish writing and collaborate with. We finished writing through email. When he was in London recording his album, I was over there doing promotions for my album and I went over there to do vocals."

Mraz told The Sun December 19, 2008 why he hooked up with Caillat. He explained: "I became a fan of Colbie through MySpace and just cold-called her to see if she'd want to write and sing together. I dug her laid-back style and her attention to little things that make relationships work. She was a delight to share the mic with."

In our Caillat interview, she cited this as a song that has changed meaning for her over the years. On stage, she would perform the song with her guitarist, Justin Young, who was also her boyfriend. Said Colbie: "When I wrote 'Lucky' with Jason Mraz I couldn't fully relate to it because I had never been in love with someone I considered my best friend. Then I fell in love with my boyfriend Justin Young and got to sing that song on stage with him every night and could relate to the song 100%. It was an amazing feeling."
