Jason never took a more pronounceable stage name, preferring to stick with Mraz, which is Czech for "frost."
As a teenager, Mraz participated in a local theater group, SPARC (School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community), playing Joseph in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
He attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City for a short time after graduating from high school in 1995, studying musical theater. Mraz dropped out of the famous school after taking up the guitar and focusing more on songwriting.
