Written by lead singer Mark Hollis with the band's producer Tim Friese-Greene, this song is about a prostitute, sung from the perspective of a man taking pity on her. "'Dum Dum Girl' isn't miserable, I just think of it as an anti-prostitution song, that's what it is," Hollis explained in Record Mirror. "I think the songs have got to be sung with feeling, so they've got to be written with feeling."
