Despite being longtime friends, Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and vocalist Damon Albarn have had an often stormy working relationship. The pair fell out after Coxon left the band during the making of their 2003 album Think Tank. Coxon explained to NME that this laid-back, moody number is about his relationship with Albarn. He admitted: "I knew it was going to be an incredibly sad song, which is why I put the crying guitar on there. What I didn't know at the time was that the lyrics would turn out to be about Damon and I, our long-term friendship and the ups and downs we've had." Coxon added: "It's a lovely song. But for all of us have kind of met in the middle with this album - we've all been on our own individual journeys, but when we came together and something like 'My Terracotta Heart' is the result, that's a good marriage of all our different tastes and outlooks."
