The lyrics start off with: "The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land, Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky," which has overtones from the John Steinbeck classic Grapes Of Wrath. In fact, the whole song seems to borrow ideas described in the book - these can be found in every alternate chapter, with one chapter describing the journey of a family and the next describing how the community on the whole is evolving.
