This song is a story told by a man who faces an unplanned pregnancy with his girlfriend. When he first receives the news, all he can think about his how his life has seemingly been ruined. The story proceeds from the man's daughter being born, all the way to the day she leaves for college. By the end of the song, the man's daughter has become his life. The song depicts how our life priorities rapidly change over the years.

Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher wrote the song. The pair have collaborated on many other hit songs, including Rascal Flatts' "I Melt " and "Banjo" and Jason Aldean's "Tattoos On This Town."

Mobley told The Tennessean it was something that happened to him just after high school. His girlfriend gave birth to a little girl, who died within eight or nine months. "Fast forward 18 years in Nashville, sitting at a red light," he continued. "It's her birthday, and that idea comes to me. She would have been 18, you know? I just started thinking about this idea, and we didn't get anything done because the whole time I am thinking about this idea." The next day, Mobley had a session booked with Neil Thrasher, and with the idea still in his mind, they started the song. At the time Thrasher was unaware of Mobley's story, so the inspiration was Neil's two little girls; one who'd just started school, and the other a baby with "blue eyes and bouncy curls." A year later, Thrasher found out about Mobley's story and they returned to his idea again.
