Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about King for a Day. By Songfacts®.

This song tells the story of a man with a feminine side. He remembers being 4 years old, sneaking into his mother's closet to try on her clothes. This doesn't go over well with his father, who puts him in therapy and wants him to be a "real man." It doesn't take: He keeps doing drag and living his way: king for a day, princess by dawn. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained to MTV: "This song is about dressing in drag. The idea behind it is try to get fraternity guys singing like an oi song."

Billie Joe Armstrong could certainly relate to the character in this song. He's often worn eyeliner on stage and has no qualms about coming off as feminine. Long a champion of LGBTQ rights, in a 1995 issue of The Advocate, he stated, "I think I've always been bisexual."

"King For A Day" is a very popular live song for Green Day, played at many of their concerts, often with Armstrong wearing a crown. It's an album cut from Nimrod, which landed in 1997 three years after their breakthrough, Dookie.
