In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Moby recalled this track: "It was the only song on the record that was really fun to play live. 'Machete' was the only techno song. It's such a weird song. To me it reminds of that late-'80s EBM. When I was recording it, I was trying to be like Meat Beat Manifesto, Frontline Assembly, Skinny Puppy. That song was my direct influence from listening to too much Front 242."
This was used in the 1999 movie Play It To The Bone, starring Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson. It was also used in the TV series Mission Hill in the 2002 episode "Andy Joins The PTA."
Play gave Moby's career a much-needed shot in the arm. A worldwide hit, nearly all of its singles reached the Top 40 in the UK. The album also boasted his sole entry on the Billboard Hot 100: "South Side."
