Did You Know?

Interesting facts and trivia about Still Waiting. By Songfacts®.

Sum 41's Deryck Whibley wrote "Still Waiting" after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Whibley told MTV.com: "It's not directly about 9/11 or the war on terrorism. It's about the war on everything. It's about the world as we know it. It's no secret that the world doesn't get along and there's all this hatred. It's everything to do with how this world functions."

Drummer, Steve Jocz and bassist, Jason "Cone" McCaslin, both told Songfacts that "Still Waiting" is one of their favorite Sum 41 tracks. Jocz added the song always proves popular live: "Well, you play these songs every day for years and years and years and years and years. They're all fun to play, but there are some that stand out that are still fun after all these years. There's an aggressive sort of energy to that one - it doesn't get old. Also, a lot of it has to do with the crowd reaction. The crowd reacts - regardless of where we are - to that song the same way. It's still fun every time."

The "Still Waiting" music video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, remains a fan favorite. At the beginning of the video, Sum 41 are seen entering the office of a conceited record executive, who demands the band change their name to "The Sums" (mocking the wave of 'The' bands of the early 2000s). Sum 41, now called "The Sums," proceed to play "Still Waiting" among an antiquated-looking set (a spoof of The Strokes and The Vines "indie" style videos). The performance soon descends into anarchy, with the band trashing the set and pushing down the "The Sums" logo behind them. Drummer, Steve Jocz, told us he is still fond of the video, adding internet mediums like YouTube help to keep its presence alive: "Our videos have fortunately aged well. So some, like our 'Still Waiting' video was what, 2002? You can watch that and it still looks okay, it looks fun and cool, and people think it's funny. I mean, that's had a lot to do with the fact that we're playing to some of the biggest audiences we've ever played and our fan base keeps regenerating and getting bigger. And I think it's because of YouTube. We can put our videos on there and they stand the test of time and people still enjoy them. I mean the age difference between our fans is between 12 and your mid-20s."
