Trivia

Interesting facts about Barbaric. By Songfacts.

"Barbaric" portrays a breakup occurring during the holiday season. It vividly captures the sudden, unexpected sense of loss that accompanies such an event. Blur frontman Damon Albarn explained to Augsburger Allgemeine in July 2023 that the Ballad of Darren cut was based on "a very lonely Christmas" that "really did happen." He continued: "The songs are a pretty accurate inventory of my life, I'm pretty open-minded on this album. Only sometimes does the mysterious peek around the corner."

Blur performed this song for the first time at an intimate concert for BBC Radio 2 at Broadcasting House in London on July 18, 2023. The band also delivered a surprise rendition of their 1994 hit single "Parklife," with British actor Phil Daniels joining them on stage.

The official visualizer for "Barbaric" was directed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Fons Schiedon. It showcases black-and-white illustrations of the melancholy Christmas scenes depicted in the lyrics ("Grow dappled, the lonely baubles on the plane tree"). Schiedon previously directed the visualizers for "The Narcissist" and "St. Charles Square."
