In 2016, Michael Bublé's two-year-old son Noah was diagnosed with liver cancer, but he's been in remission following chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Here, the Canadian crooner takes inspiration from Noah's recovery as well as his love for his wife Luisana Lopilato. The "when you go low, I go high" lyric was originally something Noah casually improvised one night during bath time. A few months later, Bublé was brainstorming song ideas with songwriter Ryan Tedder and producer Greg Wells when he recalled Noah's words. "'Hey guys, you're gonna think I'm crazy, but a few months ago when I was giving the kids a shower, my 8-year-old sang this hook,'" he told the pair. Bublé sang the chorus to them and within just over half an hour, they'd turned "an idea that had come from the head of an 8-year-old kid into one of the great songs that I've ever written."

The song is the title track of Michael Bublé's 11th studio album. The record contains 10 covers and two other original songs besides "Higher": "Mother" and "I'll Never Not Love You."
