Dan Fogelberg once said of this downtempo track that it was the first song he wrote that made him feel like he could do this for a living, adding, "Before that I had written a few songs, but they weren't very good."
Running to 6 minutes 34 seconds, "To The Morning" is appropriately the first track on his 1972 debut album Home Free. Fogelberg was signed to Epic records by the legendary executive Clive Davis, who jumped on the singer-songwriter trend. The Home Free album was recorded in Nashville with Norbert Putnam, and while Fogelberg thoroughly enjoyed the process, sales were underwhelming and Davis sent Fogelberg to Joe Walsh for his next album.
