Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wrote "Prosthetic Head" about "fake" people, like those in Hollywood. He told MTV: "It has a little bit of imagination to it, about imagining getting your head chopped off and putting a new one on and it rotting from the inside."
After the bridge, right before Billie Joe starts singing, "I see you..." you can hear someone cough. It's probably Billie because he sounds out of breath when he starts singing again.
This is the last of 18 tracks on Green Day's Nimrod album. After dropping Dookie in 1994, they were everywhere, pushing into the pop landscape further than any other punk band. They released their next album, Insomniac, in 1995, getting it out quickly to keep their momentum. It did well, but nowhere near Dookie numbers. With Nimrod, they took more time and were happier with the results. Armstrong told MTV: "It was smart to put out a record fast. We got that sophomore slump over with. Now it's like we're underdogs again."
