Jack White wrote this about Detroit, where he grew up. He sings about how it used to be a great place to live, but has become dilapidated and crime-ridden.
White wrote this song with his brother, Stephen Gillis. White was born Jack Gillis but took his wife's name when he married Meg White in 1996. A year later, they formed The White Stripes.
"Broken Bricks" is a track from The White Stripes' eponymous debut album. Like most songs on the album, it's loud and fast, a mixture of blues and garage rock. This sound went over well in Detroit but didn't catch on in the rest of America; the group got most of their early attention in the UK before breaking through in the US with the more refined "Seven Nation Army" in 2003.
