This song pays tribute to a scene in Lars von Trier's movie Melancholia, which tells the story of two sisters dealing with the trauma of an approaching rogue planet that is about to collide with Earth. Frontman Michael Gira explained to Consequence of Sound: "That's an homage to the scene where [Kirsten Dunst] is lying naked on the mossy stones bathed by the light of the malevolent planet."
Melancholia has been the inspiration for several other songs. They include: "Together Burning Bright" by The Used "Apocalypse Dreams" by Tame Impala "Moon" by Foals.
