The 1975 have been a tight-knit quartet ever since they first met at Wilmslow High School, Cheshire, in 2002. The band close Notes on a Conditional Form with this sweet and sentimental song about their brotherly bond. "I just think that there's not many love songs about some of the most beautiful, powerful relationships in your life. Especially straight guys or whatever in rock music, [they] tend not to write about how much they love their mates, or how this would be impossible and frivolous and completely pointless if we weren't all doing it together. We've been a band since we were 13, and they're my best friends. And we've never fallen out. It's a really true song."

Speaking to Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Healy revealed that the song "came quite late" in Notes on a Conditional Form's recording process. "It came quite easy that song, but I think I just wanted to write a love letter to friendship, as opposed to every love song being about our romantic relationships," he said. "I think that our friendships are obviously our most formative relationships. So shout out to the homies."

Back in 2013, The 1975 released the song "Girls" about their sexual fascination with females. This ode to bromances is an antithesis to that track. Said Healy: "We're kind of like brothers. We've got a song called 'Girls,' and I wanted to just kind of write a song about kind of how much I loved my mates, and I wanted people to have a song that's like a love song for their mates."
