Asked what inspired this track during a Reddit AMA, McLachlan replied: "The idea behind that song was the desire to separate myself from my parents. And become my own person. And let go of the demands and expectations that they placed on me, and it's all about becoming your own person and not being held back."
"Elsewhere" is part of McLachlan's third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, released in 1993 when she was on the rise, earning a following outside her native Canada. She was doing a lot of touring around this time, and it exhausted her. She waited another four years to release her next album, Surfacing, but when she did, she launched the Lilith Fair along with it. Surfacing became her biggest album by far, with hits including "Adia" and "Angel."
