This is a lushly orchestrated instrumental by Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. The soul symphony was written and produced by White and became one of his biggest hits. With its strings and wah-wah guitar, the track had a significant influence on the disco sound, which exploded in 1975 - a year after "Love's Theme" had topped the charts.
"Love's Theme" was released as an A-side single in December of 1973. The track was included on the Love Unlimited Orchestra's debut album Rhapsody in White (1974). The Love Unlimited Orchestra was a 40-piece orchestra formed by White to serve as a backing unit for him as well as for his all-female vocal trio Love Unlimited. The trio sang background vocals on White's songs and also recorded albums on their own. The track was also included on Love Unlimited's second album Under The Influence of… Love Unlimited (1973).
The track shot to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on February 9, 1974, where it stayed for one week. On April 20, another Soul instrumental, "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," also hit the top spot, this time staying for two weeks. "Love's Theme" also topped the US Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart, where it spent two weeks. It charted at #10 on both the US R&B and the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, "Love's Theme" topped the RPM 100 National Singles Chart in Canada.
