Bad Bunny (birth name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) was born and raised in the small town of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, to truck driver Tito Martínez and English teacher Lysaurie Ocasio.
Bad Bunny's devout Catholic mother took him to church, where he became part of the children's choir. He quit at 13, by which time he'd began freestyling humorous raps to entertain his classmates. Bunny's early inspirations were artists he heard on the radio, such as the "King of Reggaeton" Daddy Yankee and the great Puerto Rican salsa singer Héctor Lavoe.
He got his stage name from a childhood photo showing him looking angry after being forced to wear a plush bunny costume. After Martinez posted the picture, his followers began calling him "Conejo Malo" ("Bad Bunny").
