Rollins was born Henry Garfield. He took the name Rollins from a T-shirt a friend wore.
He was the lead singer for Punk band Black Flag from 1981-1986.
He began a solo career in 1986 with the songs "Hot Animal Machine" and "Drive By Shooting." The latter was released under the name "Henrietta Collins and the Wifebeating Childhaters." He soon formed a new band called Rollins Band with longtime friend Chris Haskett.
