Ringo's birth name is Richard Starkey. His friends called him "rings" because he wore a lot of rings, so he started calling himself Ringo Starkey before adopting the cooler-sounding Ringo Starr.
He replaced Pete Best in the Beatles when Pete started not showing up for practices. Ringo was Pete's substitute and was eventually asked to join the band as the actual drummer. When Ringo joined the band, Beatles fans would chant "Pete Best Forever, Ringo Never," at their shows.
He had many health problems as a child which kept him from getting a great education. When he was 15 he could barely read or write, which was when he decided that he had to be a drummer.
