This song, about a beautiful girl the singer is in love with, was the second solo project by Ringo Starr to reach #1 ("Photograph" is the first, and remains one of his most fondly remembered hits). The song was written by the Sherman Brothers, who are famous for writing the Disney classics "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "It's A Small World." The first recording of the song was by Johnny Burnette in 1960; his version was featured in the 1973 movie American Grafitti.
Richard Perry, who worked with Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles and many other stars, produced this track. He said that producing Ringo's album was the "greatest thrill" of his career.
The song found its way to Johnny Burnette after the Sherman Brothers asked his brother, Dorsey, to sing the demo. Dorsey and Johnny were both rockabilly singers; "You're Sixteen" was Johnny's biggest hit, reaching #8 US and #3 UK.
