The band was formed in 1980 in New Jersey by singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni, who are their only constant members.
Overkill got their name from the title track from Motörhead's second album. Overkill cites Motörhead as one of their biggest influences, and in 1988, they got the opportunity to open for their heroes.
D.D. Verni's given name is Carlos Verni. He acquired the D.D. nickname as a reference to former Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone.
