This summer anthem is the lead single from Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue's 11th studio album, Aphrodite. She said of the song, "The single was one of the last tracks to be written for the album. As I was recording it I knew that 'All the Lovers' had to be the first single; it sums up the euphoria of the album perfectly." Stuart Price, who mixed the track and was executive producer on the album, added, "'All the Lovers' is a magical song and sums up everything that the album is: Kylie doing pop dance music at her best. When you look in your mind's eye at everything Kylie is, it's on this record."
The song was written by British electro pop duo Kish Mauve who previously wrote and produced "2 Hearts," the lead single from Minogue's preceding album, X.
Joseph Kahn directed the music video, which was shot in early May 2010 around the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The concept of the clip is a re-imagination of works by American artist Spencer Tunick, who is best known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people posed in artistic formations. The clip includes some same-sex kissing which Minogue told the Associated Press's Christine Kearney paid "homage" to her gay audience who helped propel her initial success. "I said I am fine with all of that, but it can't be overt and I don't want it to be for shock value or anything like that," she said. "If you look at the demographics in any of my shows, there is all sorts there."
